Poster design plays a large role in my position and my department. If a poster isn't advertising an event, then it's recruiting students. In the academic environment, each make an important contribution.Graphic Design2011 -
Otto's Pub and Brewery is a microbrewery in State College, PA that is growing...quickly. This growth created interest to distribute their product state-wide within five years, so a re-design of their bottle labels was in order. After the new label designs were rolled out and new six-packs created, their state-wide distribution began...within three years. The re-design helped them achieve their goal two years ahead of schedule.Graphic Design, Package Design2011 -
Keewaydin Cider Mill is a joint venture between Otto's Pub and Brewery and the Keewaydin Apple Orchard in Keewaydin, PA. The Keewaydin Cider Mill identity and package was created from scratch, beginning with a creative brief and a tour of the orchard, it's buildings, and a 1940s-era cider press that is used to press apples for Keewaydin cider. Labels were created for semi-dry and semi-sweet cider, as well as a universal six-pack.Graphic Design, Packaging2011 -
My approach to logo development is very calculated. I administer creative briefs and gather a lot of information before putting pencil to paper. I tend to create clean, practical logos while adhering to an original, creative direction to maximize quick brand recognition.Branding, Graphic Design2011 -
These postcards were created to invite materials science and engineering alumni to gather at the annual Materials Science & Technology Conference. Nearly 1,200 alumni receive the invitation each year. I photograph Penn State's Old Main Building for its nostalgic quality to Penn State alumni.Digital Photography, Graphic Design, Typography2012 -
"The entire renovation of the ground floor of the Deike Building was transformational – taking a tired, underused space and turning it into a student center and classroom area that brought student success and engagement to a whole new level. In my view, the most striking element of the renovation is the floor-to-ceiling, end-to-end, slate mural with the etchings in the slate that represent the many majors and areas of research in the College. The mural attracts attention, informs the visitor, ensures that the space represents the entire college, and is visually beautiful. Michael Fleck took the concept of representing the College in images and created a masterpiece that will long be a hallmark of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and Penn State."

I imagine this is a pretty unique portfolio piece for a graphic designer/multimedia specialist that works in academia. The Materials Visualization Competition (MVC) is an image competition for materials scientists across Penn State University. Materials scientists discover very compelling images in the process of their research. SEM and TEM electron microscopes identify patterns at levels invisible to the naked eye. What is produced are images worthy of creating an image competition original to Penn State.
My role in MVC is all encompassing - I organize MVC, I advertise MVC, I collect submissions, I'm the final judge and I recruit new judges each year. After winning images are selected, I place them in a poster format that I designed so we can hang the images in our building. Finally the images are placed into a Flash gallery that I custom-built so we can display the images on our website.Digital Art, Multimedia2011 -
Sometimes it is all about who you know...but it helps when who you know trusts you to do nice work! The editor of the Journal of the American Ceramics Society (JACerS) is a faculty member in my department at Penn State. After fixing a cover image for him in 2005, he asked me if I would want the job of 'doctoring' cover images for every issue. Since then, I've had the privilege of creating artwork or 'doctoring' images for JACerS, nature materials, and Polymer Chemistry. The cover images don't always get accepted by the journals, but they still look nice enough for a portfolio!Digital Imaging, Graphic Design, Photo Manipulation2011 -
I began my web development experience by teaching myself Macromedia (now Adobe) Dreamweaver. The first website I created for my department at Penn State was a tables-based site. After our department switched to the content management system, Drupal, in 2009, the learning curve accelerated quickly and steeply. Within a very short period of time I learned enough about HTML, CSS, and PHP not only to make a website, but also how these programming and design languages communicated with each other.Design, Marketing, Web Design2011
